3rd Consortium meeting in Copenhagen

On September 17th and 18th 2025, the iDesignRES consortium gathered for its General Meeting, hosted by Aalborg University, in Copenhagen. The meeting offered an opportunity to review the project’s progress over the past months and to align priorities for the next implementation phase. Dedicated…

Description

Europe's Electricity Transmission System Operators (TSOs) are being asked to respond to the most crucial challenge in their history, namely the Energy Transition of the Electricity System.

The shifting of societies' priorities towards a direction of sustainable development, as well as technological progress, constantly give impetus to the efforts to transform the energy sector from a system based on the production and consumption of fossil energy resources, to a system based on Renewable Energy Sources (RES). This social and technological trend is also the essence of the Energy Transition.

The main objective of this effort is to decarbonize and encourage renewable energy production, empowering consumers to become an active part of the energy system.

The new era of the Electrical System naturally creates the corresponding challenges for all parties involved. Initially, the production mix becomes more dispersed, stochastic and cleaner. This change mandates the development of more efficient transmission and storage technologies, while at the same time encouraging the creation of local energy communities and activation of prosumers. In addition, the Electrical System is gradually becoming more interconnected with other sectors. Due to this trend, the critical role of networks is highlighted, but also the need to optimize the cooperation of end consumers. The solutions to the above challenges should be achieved in a short time and with high precision. For this reason, the digitization of the Energy Sector is attracting more and more attention.

Therefore, TSOs need dedicated departments to manage the challenges of the Energy Transition. The Department of Research, Technology and Development (DRTD) of IPTO undertakes this mission. By providing qualified staff and specialized knowledge, DRTD can recommend state-of-the-art technologies, methods and services to the rest of the company. It supports and develops the innovation ecosystem of Greece, promoting collaborations with Universities, young researchers, other European Administrators and ENTSO-E, as well as research centers, startups, SMEs and the Industry in the context of European, National and Internal projects .

DRTD promotes projects in the following Pillars:

The services and contribution of DRTD, however, are not simply focused around the IPTO and the needs of the Transmission System, but also benefit the entire Electric System in terms of energy efficiency, faster and safer integration of RES, promoting environmental protection, optimising the use of infrastructure, safeguarding system resilience, enriching energy policies and enhancing consumer participation, and improving services to them.

For us, innovation means expanding the horizons for cooperation and development with the outside world thanks to our communication with the participants in the innovation ecosystem to achieve added value for the Company, the Electric System and the whole of Greek society.
