CAPE
Project Description
The CAPE (European Open Compute Architecture for Powerful Edge) project is revolutionizing edge-cloud computing by developing Edge Micro Data Centers (EMDCs) and Embedded High-Performance Servers (eHPS) as a new unit of computing for data-intensive edge environments. This open, high-density platform supports heterogeneous computing (XPU), RISC-V architectures, and industry-standard COM-HPC form factors, ensuring scalability and adoption within Europe’s OEM ecosystem.
A key innovation in CAPE is Infrastructure from Code (IfC), a cloud-agnostic overlay that simplifies deployment across the edge-to-cloud continuum. By abstracting cloud complexities, IfC allows end users to manage data, AI models, and applications across both on-premise and off-premise environments with minimal technical overhead. This ensures digital sovereignty and seamless application deployment.
CAPE’s solutions will be tested in three real-world use cases:
- Intelligent Electric Energy Microgrids – optimizing energy management at the edge.
- Edge AI – enabling advanced AI processing in low-latency environments.
- Satellite Communications – enhancing connectivity using RISC-V (EPI) and CXL technologies.
Each use case will be evaluated on technical, economic, and sustainability criteria and benchmarked against traditional local cloud infrastructures and edge-optimized data centers.
By fostering open hardware and software innovation, CAPE enables scalable, flexible, and efficient edge computing solutions, positioning Europe at the forefront of next-generation cloud-edge infrastructure.
