We have just concluded the first two days of the ENFLATE Review Meeting in Gothenburg. The event featured a dynamic mix of inspiring presentations and engaging discussions, as well as a practical site visit. On Day 1, representatives from all six ENFLATE demo sites — Skiathos, Appenzell, Láchar, Kungsbacka, Sofia and Geneva — presented the remarkable progress they have made and the lessons they have learned. These cities showcased a variety of innovations, such as consumer-driven market tools, cross-vector flexibility mechanisms and non-energy services in sectors like healthcare and mobility. Technical deep dives revealed advances in the interoperable IT platform, TSO–DSO coordination tools and emerging market designs that will shape the future of energy flexibility.

On Day 2, the focus shifted to an afternoon visit to EKSTA’s broadcasting site in Kungsbacka. Having been operational for nine years, this smart district heating system is a testament to sustainable, reliable infrastructure.

Highlights included:central boilers, pellet silos, full computer control, a live dashboard allows residents to track the system's performance ans a hybrid energy setup in Fjärås village that supplies 300 flats with 90 houses via solar panels connected to a substation.

The system boasts intelligent energy balancing: a backup generator kicks in during winter outages, the system runs on direct power when electricity prices drop, and energy is pulled from storage when prices surge — showcasing real-world flexibility. We are extremely grateful to EKSTA and all the project partners for making these two days both informative and inspiring.
