Trilater agreement for the interconnection of Skiathos with hellenic cables

Skiathos interconnection – Contract with Hellenic Cables

The Interconnection of Skiathos to the High Voltage System is moving into the implementation stage, after the contract for the cable sections was signed between the Management of IPTO and contractor “Hellenic Cables”, on 21 February 2020, at the Operator’s headquarters.

The contract for the “Mantoudi-Skiathos” project, amounting to EUR 42.8 million, covers the design, supply and installation of a submarine cable with a length of 30 km between Skiathos and Evia, at a maximum depth of 400 meters. The second branch of the project includes the construction of a new GIS 150/20 kV Substation in Skiathos, by ABB, the selected contractor, with a EUR 9.5 million budget.

The project with a total EUR 52.3 million budget is expected to be completed by the end of 2021, signalling the interconnection of the Sporades with the 150 kV System for the first time. This will address problems with the power supply of the islands of Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonnisos in a final manner, shielding the islands in energy terms also during the summer months.

Mr Manos Manousakis, Chairman and CEO of IPTO, noted on the subject “We are very pleased that yet another island interconnection is being carried out on schedule and speedily by IPTO. This interconnection ensures the power supply, not only of Skiathos, but also of Skopelos and Alonnisos. This is a state-of-the-art project, since the cable throughout the length of the submarine route, which is 29 km long, is protected for the first time”.
