Energy Control Center upgrade

The Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) has launched an upgrade for its Energy Control Centers, which involves updating its software, hardware and control rooms, after more than 20 years of seamless operation.

The Energy Management System (EMS) and the Market Management System and Market Settlement System (MMS, MSS) of IPTO are critical national infrastructures, necessary for monitoring, operating and controlling the Hellenic Interconnected Electricity Production and Transmission System, and for the operation of the Liberalised Electricity Market.

At a special event held on 20 December 2019 at the IPTO Energy Control Center in Kryoneri Attica, the Operator’s Management gave Mr Kostis Hatzidakis, Minister of Environment and Energy, and Ms Alexandra Sdoukou, Secretary General for Energy and Mineral Resources of the Ministry, a tour of the control rooms where digital display walls have been installed, showing all the electrical interconnections, including the new islands recently interconnected to the Hellenic Electricity Transmission System (HETS).

The project, of a total 4.8 million euro budget, is co-financed from national and European funds in the framework of the NSRF 2014-2020.

Mr Kostis Hatzidakis, Minister of Environment and Energy, made the following statement: «»

Mr Μanos Manousakis, Chairman and CEO of IPTO, noted: “The upgraded Energy Control Center incorporates developments in terms of systems technology, as well as the rapid changes effected in the Electricity Market in recent years. Today is an important day for us, as we received confirmation of the participation of Italian Operator TERNA in the South-east Europe Regional  Security Coordinator (SEE RSC), to be created in early 2020 in Thessaloniki. With the addition of the second largest European Operator to the list of current shareholders (IPTO, ESO-EAD and Transelectrica), the RSC will expand its services beyond the Balkan peninsula, to the Italy-Greece Corridor”.
