The implementation of Phase C of the Cyclades Islands Interconnection project proceeds according to schedule and is projected by the Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) to conclude within the fourth quarter of 2020.
The installation of the second 150kV HVAC submarine cable between Lavrion and Syros will ensure reliable and lower-priced electricity supply for Syros, Paros, Naxos and Mykonos Islands. In addition, the transmission capacity to-and-from the Cyclades Islands will double, providing a basis for higher penetration of Renewable Energy Sources in the Greek Electricity Transmission System. The project, which is co-financed from EU and Greek State Funds, is budgeted at EUR 111 million in total.
On Wednesday, December 4, representatives of the administrations of IPTO and NEXANS, which is the contractor of the Project, visited the cable laying vessel in Lavrion port. The first section of the submarine cable (28 km) will be laid within the next few days, while the second section (80 km) will be installed by the contractor within the first quarter of 2020.
Mr Μanos Manousakis, Chairman and CEO of IPTO stated: “The Operator shall interconnect the Greek Islands in line with our commitments. Phase C of the Cyclades Electrical Interconnection, which has already been accelerated by two years, safeguards the uninterrupted power supply to Cyclades Islands, even if a shutdown –intended or not– is to take place at any of the existing interconnections”.
Ms Ragnhild Katteland, CEO of Nexans Norway, said: “We are delighted to continue the cooperation with our good partner in this, IPTO, and are fully committed to the execution of this important project, Phase C of the Cyclades Islands Interconnection”.
