The Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) has successfully completed the electrification of the 150kV AC submarine cable connecting Andros to Evia.
The new cable contributes to the strengthening of the electrical interconnection of Andros and Tinos Islands with the mainland, as part of the North Power Supply Corridor of Cyclades. The cable connecting Andros with Tinos is expected to be electrified in January 2020.
The new cable project ensures the reliable power supply to the Cycladic Islands during the peak summer period, along with Phase B of the Cyclades Interconnection with the Greek Electric Power Transmission System. Phase B will be completed with the construction of the new GIS Substation in Naxos Island and the submarine interconnection of Naxos with Paros and Mykonos expected in the first months of 2020. Both projects, which are co-financed from EU and Greek State Funds, are budgeted at Euro 70 million in total.
The new submarine lines incorporate unique innovation features, as they are the first ever-installed high-voltage cables that come with high-strength synthetic fibre armour design, which stabilizes the grid voltage and minimizes the environmental footprint.
Mr Μanos Manousakis, Chairman and CEO of IPTO stated: “In addition to the innovative features of the interconnection projects IPTO implements throughout Greece, our top priority is the expansion of the Electric Power Grid based on the principles of sustainable development. The electrification of the Evia-Andros cable brings us one step closer to the electric interconnection of the Greek Islands, to be completed before 2030, according to the Ten-Year Network Development Plan that we have already drawn up and is to be submitted to consultation by the end of the current year”.
