On 6 February 2020, IPTO launched the submarine 150kV AC interconnection of Andros and Tinos, two months after the successful electrification of the cable interconnecting the island of Andros with the mainland system (Evia).
In the meantime, the Operator is planning to replace the overhead lines of Andros Island with underground cables, in order to protect the island’s power supply and minimise any visual nuisance. Alternative methods for burying the lines are being investigated, following the damage caused to the overhead lines during recent severe weather conditions. Specifically, we are examining the construction of a 15 km underground line, connecting the Substation of Andros with the south end of the island, at the landing point of the submarine cable connecting Andros to Tinos.
Manos Manousakis, Chairman and CEO of IPTO, noted on the subject: “Andros has the longest overhead Transmission System in the Cyclades. This leaves the island’s power supply system vulnerable to severe weather phenomena, as we unfortunately witnessed recently. The State and the Operator, aiming to protect the island’s power supply and to minimise any inconvenience to the residents, proposed the solution of burying the overhead lines. In the meanwhile, a few days ago IPTO successfully launched the second submarine cable connecting Andros and Tinos, securing a dual power circuit for Andros”.
