The preliminary Ten-year Network Development Plan (TYNDP) of the Independent Power Transmission Operator for years 2021-2030 will include the interconnection of the islands of the North Aegean, thus completing the entire spectrum of planned island interconnections over a 10-year horizon. More specifically, IPTO is launching the project for the Interconnection of the North Aegean Islands in parallel to the Dodecanese interconnection project, with a total budget of EUR 935 million and EUR 1.477 billion respectively, in three sub-phases:
- Phase A includes the Corinth-Kos HVC, Kos-Rhodes, Nea Santa-Lemnos HVC and Lemnos-Lesvos interconnections, which are due for completion in 2027.
- Phase B includes the Aliveri-Skyros HVC, Lesvos-Chios, Kos-Samos and Rhodes-Karpathos interconnections, due for completion in 2028.
- Phase C includes the closing of the interconnecting loops with the Lesvos-Skyros and Chios-Samos interconnections, due for completion in 2030.
The 2021-2030 TYNDP, budgeted for a total EUR 4.4 billion, also includes the completion of the electrical interconnections of Crete and the Cyclades, projects to enhance the Ionian Islands Loop, completion of the 400 kV System expansion to the Peloponnese, reinforcement of the 400 kV System in the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace and the expansion of international interconnections, among other things.
International Interconnections: The new TYNDP outlines the construction of the second interconnecting line linking the Greek and Bulgarian Systems. The new 400 kV interconnection is a major project of pan-European interest and is expected to be integrated into the European System by early 2023. We are further examining the upgrade of the existing and the development of new interconnections with the neighbouring Systems of North Macedonia and Turkey respectively. To this end, relevant feasibility studies will be prepared in the immediate future for the selection of the projects that will be proposed for inclusion in the Ten-year Network Development Plan of ENTSO-E and the corresponding National Development Plans.
RES Penetration: After the scheduled projects of the new TYNDP are completed, the Electricity Transmission System, combined with the change in the composition of the power production mix and the inclusion of new storage systems, will be able to meet the needs of the new targets set by the National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) for 2030.
Manos Manousakis, Chairman and CEO of IPTO, noted on the subject: “The Ten-year Network Development Plan 2021-2030 includes - for the first time - the islands of the North Aegean, thus covering all the islands across the geographical span of Greece. The new TYNDP delivers significant environmental benefits and sets the stage for increasing the share of RES in electricity generation, in line with the national energy strategic plan. At the same time, the Operator is closely monitoring energy developments in the SE Europe region, and in cooperation with ENTSO-E is planning new electrical interconnections with the goal of contributing to the integration of the single European energy market. At the implementation level, IPTO is proceeding with the projects without delays and is making optimal use of its available resources aiming at an even greater acceleration of the country's interconnections.”
