IPTO completes the interconnection of the Peloponnese in the Ultra High Voltage System

IPTO is launching the call for tenders for the construction of the new 400 kV Overhead Transmission Line that will connect the upgraded Koumoundourou Ultra High Voltage Centre in Attica with the new Corinth Ultra High Voltage Center

IPTO is launching the call for tenders for the construction of the new 400 kV Overhead Transmission Line that will connect the upgraded Koumoundourou Ultra High Voltage Centre in Attica with the new Corinth Ultra High Voltage Center. The new Transmission Line, approximately 86 km long, is part of the wider project of the “Eastern Corridor” (Megalopolis-Corinth-Attica) implemented by the Operator for the interconnection of the Peloponnese in the Ultra High Voltage System and has a construction completion horizon until the end of 2025.

This is a particularly critical project as its launch will drastically increase the electricity transmission capacity between Peloponnese and Attica, which until now are exclusively connected by 150 kV lines. In addition, it will significantly improve voltage stability in the electricity system of southern Greece and relieve pressure on the saturated grids in the Peloponnese, allowing the safe integration of new RES plants into the Transmission System.

The construction of the new Corinth-Koumoundourou HVC Ultra High Voltage Line as well as the reconstruction of the Koumoundourou UHVC will be co-financed by EUR 30.1 million from the Recovery and Resilience Fund, within the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0”, while the remaining amount is expected to be covered by equity and corporate borrowing.

The Chairman and CEO of IPTO, Mr. Manos Manousakis, said in this regard: “IPTO is making progress also in the terrestrial electrical connections with the utmost expediency. By 2025, the new Corinth-Attica 400 kV Line will complete the entire Eastern Peloponnese Corridor and become another strong link of the Transmission System in the southern part of Greece. The expansion of the Ultra High Voltage interconnections is fully aligned with the Operator’s strategy for even more secure electrification of consumers throughout Greece, as well as for the acceleration of RES, through the expansion of the electricity space.”
