On Tuesday, October 13, the inauguration of the Naxos Electrical Interconnection in the High Voltage System took place, a fact that marks the completion of the Phase Β Cyclades Interconnection with the Continental System.
The Minister of Environment and Energy Kostis Hatzidakis and the Secretary General of Energy and Mineral Raw Materials, Alexandra Sdoukou, inaugurated the interconnection of Naxos with Mykonos and Paros, as well as the High Voltage Substation in Naxos. The ceremony held in the presence of the Minister of Labor (and at the same time Cyclades Member of Parliament) Ioannis Vroutsis, the South Aegean Regional Governor George Hatzimarkos, the Cyclades Members of Parliament Katerina Monogiou and Nikos Syrmalenios, the Mayor of Naxos Dimitris Lianos, the President of RAE Athanasios Dagoumas and other executives of Regional and Local Authorities.
The Phase B of the Cyclades interconnection includes the installation of submarine cables between Naxos-Mykonos and Naxos-Paros, as well as the construction of a closed type substation (GIS) in Naxos. It also includes the upgrade of the existing cable connection of Evia - Andros and Andros - Tinos which was completed in early 2020. In addition, the power supply of the islands of Heraklia, Schinoussa and Koufonisia is being upgraded. The project has a total budget of 68 million euros and is implemented with the co-financing of Greece and the European Union.
The Minister of Environment & Energy Mr. Kostis Hatzidakis stated: "The project we are inaugurating today is very important. First, it strengthens the security of energy supply of the Cyclades and of course of Naxos. Secondly, it is environmentally useful because it closes the PPC polluting plants, namely, it is a green project. Finally, it is financially useful because every year we pay 700 million euros for the so-called Public Service Obligations (PSO), with which we subsidize the power supply of the non - interconnected islands. Thanks to the island interconnections, implemented by IPTO, this burden will be drastically reduced. Already, thanks to the completion of the first three phases of the Cyclades Interconnection, we are saving about 100 million euros ".
The President & CEO of IPTO, Mr. Manos Manousakis, stated about: "Today we celebrate another big step for the energy upgrade of the Cyclades, a historic project with a budget of 832 million euros for the four stages of its implementation. Especially for the interconnection of Naxos, after many years of discussions and planning, the contracts were signed in 2018. Despite the adversity of the pandemic, IPTO managed to implement this important project without significant delays. In the coming months, the competition process is expected to be announced for the fourth and final phase of the Cyclades Interconnection, which includes Santorini, Milos, Folegandros and Serifos, putting a final end to the power supply problems of the island complex".
